How To Use Easy Transfer Cable
You can use the Window7 Easy Transfer feature to send files from one computer to another or even to send files to an external hard drive. This feature makes changing to a new computer a breeze.
How To Use File Transfer Cable
Before you start Easy Transfer, make sure that both PCs are plugged in. Don’t rely on batteries. A Windows Easy Transfer can take a long time, and it’s disk intensive. It’s also much faster if you don’t use wireless connections: Plug both computers into the same router, if humanly possible.
Using a USB Easy Transfer Cable. To use this method, connect the USB Easy Transfer Cable on both computers. Always start Windows Easy Transfer on the new computer first nd follow the on-screen instructions. If the old computer is using a different Windows operating system, Easy Transfer will display instructions on how to download the Windows. Log on to Windows 7 on to the To PC.
Make sure your hardware is working, and run Windows 7 long enough to become familiar with it.
Make sure the connection between the To and From PCs is working.
If both the To and From PCs are connected to your network, choose Start→Computer and click the Network link on the left side to make sure that the computers can see each other. If you’re not using a network, attach a USB cable to both PCs or prepare a big stack of CDs.
On the To PC, choose Start→Getting Started→Transfer Your Files.
The Windows Easy Transfer wizard shows itself.
Click Next.
Windows Easy Transfer takes you through some easy questions, such as how you will transfer the files and whether you are on the To computer.
Do one of the following, depending on your circumstances:

After any setup files are transferred, you’re instructed to go to the From computer. From there, start the MigSetup.exe program in the WindowsEasyTransfer folder.

Deselect the check boxes of any user whose data you don’t want to transfer.
If you want to select only certain kinds of data, click the Customize link.
You can trim down what you want to transfer.
If you store data in a folder other than your Documents folder (or its subfolders, such as Pictures or Music) or the common Microsoft e-mail folders, you must click Advanced, find the folder, and select the check box next to it.
Click Transfer.
Easy Transfer kicks in, warns you not to use either computer until the transfer is complete, and (sometimes hours later) finishes the transfer.
When Windows Easy Transfer works, it’s great, but it frequently stalls in the middle of a transfer. You can try to run another Windows Easy Transfer, but you might have to dig in and do it manually or hire a pro.

Start Windows Easy Transfer

Start with the new Windows 7 machine and go to Start Getting Started Transfer your files.
Click through the Welcome screen and select “An external hard disk or USB flash drive”.
Next choose “this is my new computer”.
Answer this screen as No.
Select “I need to install it now” to install Windows Easy Share now so you get the latest updated version. At this point you want to make sure the external drive you want to use is plugged into the Windows 7 machine.
Now choose “External hard disk or shared network folder” to copy the Easy Transfer program to it.
After the Easy Transfer file is copied over you will be prompted to head over the old computer.
Configure XP Transfer Process
Now over on the XP machine plug in the external hard drive and launch Easy Transfer.
You’re presented with a progress display while it prepares to run.
A Welcome screen is displayed just like on the Windows 7 machine.
Again choose “An external hard disk or USB flash drive”.
After scanning the user accounts and their settings you’re presented with a general list where you can select what to save.
Clicking on the Advanced link allows a much more detailed way to select individual files and folders, when complete click on Save.
You have the option to password protect the backup.
A successful save is complete and now time to go back and plug the external drive into the new Windows 7 machine.
Restore Settings
On the Windows 7 machine this time click Yes to this question.
Explorer opens and navigate to the location of the backup on the external drive.
Now you can restore the entire backup or you can chose specific files and folders to restore, save your selection and begin the transfer.
When the transfer is complete you can see a report of what transferred or suggestions for additional programs
Not all programs and settings are going to transfer to your new OS but this definitely makes it easier to transfer compatible program settings, your files, folders and important documents.
